DU QUOIN, ILL., is a city of 7,500
    citizens. But on Sunday, September
4, for the 20 mile National Championship
Dirt Track Race, there’ll be more than
that number in the grand stand watching
the races at the Du Quoin State Fair.
The grand stand, itself new in the midst
of an 1,100-acre fairgrounds that seem
more like a park than a fairgrounds,
seats 8,500 persons. If there’s any com-
parison to last year, the grand stand will
be full for this year’s national.
The one mile dirt track is used for
motorcycles, big cars, midgets and horses.
Cycle fans who come to Du Quoin two
days early and stay a day later will be
able to watch top-notch racing in four
sports in four straight days on the same
track, On Friday, September 2, there’ll be
Grand Circuit horse racing at the track
On Saturday, the 100 mile national cham-
pionship AAA big car race will be held
Then comes motorcycling’s 20 mile Na-
tional Championship Dirt Track Race on
Sunday, followed by the 100 mile national
championship AAA midget auto race on
Monday, Labor Day. That’s quite a sports
    card for any race fan.
To combine fun with the races, take in
the Du Quoin State Fair, which runs con-
tinuously from August 29 to September 5.
The fairgrounds are a beautiful com-
munity park with 19 bodies of water rang-
ing in depth from 40 to 60 feet. The small
lakes and streams are a paradise to fisher-
men, who fish both from the banks and
    from boats.
    Stretching away from the fairgrounds
proper is the space allocated to family
reunions and picnics. Cyclists wanting to
enjoy an outdoor get-together and picnic
will find 75 picnic tables and ovens built
    of stone awaiting them.
    Where To Stay
    Sleeping accommodations in Du Quoin
are limited during the fair, but nearby
towns have hotels, tourist courts and
    tourist homes. Try Benton, Carbondale,
    Murphysboro, Pinckneyville, Mt. Vernon,
    Centralia and Herrin.
Du Quoin is about 150 miles south of
Front view of the new Du Quoin State Fair grand stand, from which fans will view the 20 mile
National Championship Dirt Track Race on September 4. The grand stand has seats for 8,500 persons.
Part of the community park at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds in Illinois. Here in the grounds will
be found picnic and recreation areas free to all. Fishing is good in the many bodies of water.
Springfield, Ill.; about 75 miles southeast
of St. Louis, Mo., and about 100 miles
    west of Evansville, Ind.
Motorcycle race fans can see four na-
tional championships in two weeks in this
part of the country. On August 21 the 25
mile national will be held on the mile
track at the Illinois State Fair at Spring-
field. The next Saturday, August 27, the
15 mile national can be seen at the Wis-
consin State Fair’s one mile track in Mil-
waukee. Next day, August 28, Muskegon,
Mich., just across Lake Michigan from
    Milwaukee, is national championship day
for Class A hill climbers on Mt. Garfield.
Then on September 4 the 20 mile na-
tional runs at Du Quoin. So riders and
fans get to take part in four nationals and
three state fairs in a 14-day period.
    Whatta time!
